Some recent news for you to read about:
03 July 2009 – Thinkbox TV - The Red Brick Road
Owen has just finished the sound on the new Thinkbox TV campaign, created to promote TV advertising. Although each classic ad soundtrack sounds totally authentic, each iconic snippet was actually re-created either by Jungle or by Yellow Boat to fit the actor’s performance. Every re-recorded element Owen then fitted and aged by treating it with vintage analogue equipment to give it the period feel of its era. In fact the only original element remaining is the Acrington Stanley from the famous “Ian Rush” Milk commercial. Thanks to Chris Palmer and The Red Brick Road for a really interesting and challenging project.
Take a look at Owen's showreel to see for yourselves.
29 June 2009 – Martin Aspinall - M&C Saatchi - East Midland Trains
Jim Griffin has recently completed the mix on a great set of animations for M&C Saatchi on their work for East Midlands Trains. The audio is track is produced almost entirely from vocal sounds created by a New York beat box artist named Reggie Watts. After creating a pacey beat box music track to accompany the fast moving pictures the creative team decided to use Reggie's vocal talent to create all the other sound effects to accompany the piece. Reggie recorded a whole set of various sounds in the vocal booth which Jim and the creative team experimented with to compliment the visual action.
18 June 2009 – M&C Saatchi - Ladbrokes Casino
Director Scott Lyons (Factory) had 4 City blocks in Johannesburg shut down for filming. With the footage the Mill then created a 12 foot Lemur playing hide & seek with his human 'victim' around the city. Jim Griffin @ Zoo (The Jungle Group) then added an eerie layer of sinister sound design which when combined with a discordant music track (from Sound Tree) gives the ad a menacing edge. Lots of metallic crashes & groans were used to create the Lemur's deserted urban hunting ground and an upbeat African VO added at the end to help the reveal.
29 May 2009 – Frances Castelli - Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R - Oxfam Charity
Giant have just finished the post on Oxfam's new spot to highlight climate change. The film, directed by Francis Castelli of RKCR/Y&R required a very clean and simple look to accompany the straightforward message, combining hand drawn animation with high resolution footage shot on a Red Digital Camera. Jon Myers completed the visual post in Smoke.
23 April 2009 – The Apprentice
Gez Lloyd has long been used to having his work on our screens at home, but in a change from the norm this week, he found himself personally the subject of our viewing pleasure. The task for Sir. Alan Sugar's aspiring business successes this week on The Apprentice was to create an advertising pitch for a cereal campaign. The hopefuls found themselves in at various advertising agencies, production and post-production studios in the London area including our very own Jungle Studios. Gez Lloyd had the pleasure of recording the jingle for the cereal 'Wake Up Call' in Studio 4, which you can catch on the BBC iPlayer about 25 minutes in, using this link...
15 April 2009 – Pete Davies - CBBC - Little Howard's Big Question
09 April 2009 – Albion - Absolute Radio 'Carrot Cake'
Owen Griffiths continues his work on the Absolute Radio campaign from Albion London. Doug, the slightly unhinged Absolute Radio security guard, is back in another set of ads promoting the station. There are 20 films in total across the campaign, the latest, 'Carrot Cake' sees Doug sharing a piece of the aforementioned treat with the receptionist. As they enjoy the cake he begins reminiscing about an ex girlfriend of his; the conversation takes an uncomfortable and inappropriate turn until he is distracted by music emanating from the studio. The spot finishes with his catchphrase: "That's good, that's real good."
02 March 2009 – Fallon - Cadbury Dairy Milk 'Eyebrows'
Chris Turner mixed the latest Glass And A Half Production from Fallon's Cadbury Dairy Milk campaign. The brief, to create a piece of content that gives people the same joyful feeling they have when they eat Cadbury Dairy Milk. This task fell to two young children waiting for their picture to be taken in a photographic studio. Whilst the photographer is out of the room the pair display some spectacularly acrobatic eyebrows by making them dance along to Freestyle's 1989 electro classic, Don't Stop The Rock. The routine climaxes when the girl whips out an inflated balloon and jams along to the track by letting the air squeak out of it.
Check out Chris Turners show reel to see more.
11 January 2009 – Campaign Big Awards
The Jungle Group sound designers' work featured well in this years Campaign Big Awards. Owen worked on the winning radio spot for The Department for Transport in the Government category. Will Cohen's work on the Audi radio spot 'Missing' made finalist in Automotive and in the TV and Cinema section of Automotive both the wonderful VW Night Drive spot which was mixed by Hass and VW Enjoy The Everyday by James Saunders for DDB London also featured. Chris Turner's work on the nostalgic Paddington for Marmite Squeezy made finalist in Grocery, Soft Drinks and Household. M&C Saatchi's radio spot Harry Patch for The London Transport Museum was the winner for Sport, Travel and Leisure as worked on by Toby Jim and Chris Mac. In the Media and Entertainment category Toby had two radio spots for The Times and Nigel's epic Mail On Sunday spot Battle received special commendaton.
22 December 2008 – Strictly Come Dancing
Strictly come Dancing - Red Bee Media
Having just finished the BBC promos for the next round of Strictly Come Dancing, Directed by Red Bee Media director Matt Losasso, Toby revealed; how he managed to re-edit a 40 second section of
Strauss's The Blue Danube. The edit was cut to the 2001:A Space Odyssey original film score, but the rights for that recording could not be cleared. Twelve other different recordings were tried, but none of them worked with the cut in the same way, as they were recorded with live Orchestras. The only way round this was to take a version by The London Philharmonic (thanks Extreme music) and meticulously work through each bar, time stretching or compressing each section to match the film score version.
Have a listen to the results on Toby's showreel.
10 October 2008 – Lets dance!
M&S Autumn 'Lets Dance' Rainey Kelly
Nigel Manington was lucky enough to be able to use the original 24 track splits of David Bowie's Let's Dance for the recent M & S Autumn campaign. Sally Pritchett from Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe Y&R had to source the original recordings in order for Nigel to make their 40 second edit to work. However not having any notes of any kind about which effects or EQ settings were used save for one scribble on the box which read 'Tape delay of 7 and a half foot' made the task somewhat more challenging. Still Nigel managed to produce an edit which worked and recreate the mix within the space of a few hours. He was more than happy to hear that David Bowie had heard and approved the mix as "very good."
29 September 2008 – One to listen out for...
'Vodafone' BBH
Toby Griffin and Will Morris recently headed down to the Borderline club to record a radio script with Sam and Dave from BBH and Ben from Vodafone, for The Vodafone Live Music Awards. The idea was to get vodafone users to text the word gig, to win two free tickets to the event. It was written around a rodie sound checking microphones in a club, with a clever play on the terms 'Testing, texting' and 'One Two, Win Two'.
05 September 2008 – Keep up the good work Transfer!
Transfer continue to get positive feedback from our clients, and the team as a whole is working the best it ever has; assisting more in the creative process on jobs, and forging stronger bonds with engineers and clients than ever before.
05 August 2008 – Some of the more interesting bits and pieces we have been up to lately.
'Persil' BBH
Gez Lloyd and Mike Bamford kung fu'd their way around London with Sam, Dan and Brad from BBH with a couple of budding young stars for their recent Persil radio spots. The boys ran around Regents Park recording 8 year old Raul Griffiths singing Glenn Campbell's Rhinestone Cowboy and 5 year old Katie Wilson singing the Carl Douglas classic, Kung Fu Fighting. Next up was piling everyone on the 205 bus to entertain the passengers on the top deck with another rousing performance before finishing up in a busy square just off Liverpool Street entertaining the lunching city folk. The final result was two excitable kids, two exhausted recording engineers, two happy creatives and two very lovely radio ads.
Honda 'Jump' Weiden & Kennedy
The new Honda “Jump” TV spot is on air, after a year of planning and an amazing shoot in the Mojave desert. Directed by Johnny Green and conceived by Wieden and Kennedy Creative Heads, Tony and Kim, the film is a beautifully photographed piece, capturing the adrenalin rush of a mass skydive, as the Honda team create shapes in mid-air which symbolise the innovative features of the new Accord. Finishing up with a parachute display spelling out the word Accord, the film needed a Sound Design to reflect the grace of the skydivers, and the feel of a huge parachute team in action.
After creating the sound for the teaser spots which aired before the live Channel 4 jump – a groundbreaking tie-in which was broadcast the week before the 90” broke - Owen had a day and a half to finalise all the sound for the flagship film. Integrating his own carefully created Sound Design, largely recorded and treated in the studio, Owen built on the atmospheric early edits created by editor Neil Smith at Work. As the wind noise of the actual jumps rendered any location sound useless, Owen worked with the team to create a soundscape of violent engine and wind noise for the opening sequence in the planes, which juxtapose with the quiet, calm shots of Mr Honda in the Control Tower. Then the extraordinary mid-air sequences shot from the sky as the team descended at over 100 mph required a graceful palette of almost abstract wind noise, occasionally ripped by a diver scything through frame. All this had to work with the excellent Esquivel track sourced by Nick at Soundtree, which takes the piece to another level. Take a look at Owen's show reel to see for yourselves...
'Budweiser' Fallon
The band in Fallon's new Budweiser spots really did play most of their instruments with bud bottles. Recorded by Eric McConnell at his East Nashville studio, his colleague Richard Battaglia then spent three sleepless nights compiling the individual takes and uploading them to our ftp site so by morning the transfer boys could prep them for James Saunders to piece together and mix. This also involved adding extra detail to the tracks with Scotty overdubbing percussion on various lumps of wood and Will Morris tapping guitar strings with his Jungle pen. James Saunder's show reel shows all....
'Soulwax' PIAS RECORDINGS
Soulwax/2manydjs 1 hour feature film premiered at The Ether Festival at The Royal Festival Hall on Thursday 24th April to a sold out auditorium followed by the band playing live in the foyer. Directed by Saam Farahmand and filmed with one camera across a good deal of planet Earth, the film is pretty much a warts and all, snapshot of life on the road with one of the most popular bands around at the moment capturing all the chaos, humour and excitement of a world tour. The film will now follow the band on another 25 date world tour and will be released soon on dvd. Will Cohen was called up to take on the epic task piecing together an engaging soundtrack from whole heap of very different live recordings. An enormous amount of dialogue editing, serious amounts of fixing, foley, sound effects/design, mixing of some of the band's live multitrack recordings and a final mixdown.. The film also includes interviews with the band, various collaborators, behind the scenes footage and of course lots of music. Have a look at the Trailer on Will's show reel!
"The Observer - Book of Food" Weiden & Kennedy
Matt Brace from Marmalade recently cast the diet aside for some work on a nice stop motion animation short for The Observer Food Monthly. This basically involved a sizeable purchase from Berwick Street Market which Matt had to chop, peel, munch and swallow in order to create the sounds required for the animated items in the piece. Check it out for yourselves on Matts show reel...
"Trevor Nelsons The Lick" MTV UK
Jim Griffin has helped long-term clients MTV celebrate 10 Years of Trevor Nelson's The Lick. Trevor is the longest serving VJ on the UK feed of MTV and to celebratethe show'x tenth anniversary, Director Anna Snowman filmed pretty much most of the current British RnB, Hip Hop, Soul and Grime royalty dancing around with party blowers. Jim cut up the track, added some phatness to it and recorded Trevor's virtuoso performance on the Party Blower. It's a fun piece and if you look closely you may just see John Barnes. Take a look at Jim's showreel to find out more...
"Nissan Qashqai" TBWA
Owen has just finished a Global Nissan campaign for TBWA, directed by Danny Kleinman. Filmed in Argentina, the 60, 40, 30 and 20 second spots feature a whole city of buildings coming alive and playing with the new Nissan Qashqai. With smashing debris fists, arms made of fire escapes and scaffolding, plus cranes kicking the car around, the project provided excellent scope for exciting sound design. In fact, Chris Southwell even went to the lengths of temporarily “liberating” two lengths of scaffolding to drag around in the Jungle mews for a section within the film. Ironically the next day, workmen arrived for neighbouring restaurant Quo Vadis to erect scaffolding in exactly the same place! Owen's showreel tells all....
11 April 2008 – One to watch...
"Guinness" AMV BBDO
Chris Turner sent a team of crack audio operatives down to Twickenham for some recent Guinness work where they were allowed access to various parts of the stadium during a sell-out game to record crowd reactions as well as commentators in the gantry. They also went along to Rosslyn Park and bribed a team with a crate of Guinness to record close up player action and movements such as kicking, tackling, passing, gouging, stamping, pulling heads off and drinking Guinness from cans. See it for yourselves on Chris Turner's show reel!
"Nick Replay" Nickelodeon UK
Engineer Jim Griffin had the pleasure of working with sports presenter Chris 'Unbelievable' Kamara, commentating with his trademark flanbouyant style on snail racing for a series of promos for Nickelodeon's Nick Replay. Check out Jim's show reel to see for yourselves!
